What Is the Difference Between NYC Food Protection and ServSafe Food Manager?

These are two completely separate certifications.
The NYC Food Protection Course is a certification specifically designed to meet New York City Health Department requirements. It is not the same as the ServSafe Food Manager certification.
If you operate a food establishment outside of New York City, such as in Westchester County, NY, or Bergen County, NJ, different local requirements apply, and ServSafe Food Manager certification will be required or accepted.
ServSafe Food Manager
ServSafe Manager is a manager-level food safety certification that is ANAB-accredited under Conference for Food Protection standards. The certification exam is proctored and tests knowledge of food safety practices, management responsibilities, and regulatory requirements.
In Simple Terms
NYC Food Protection = NYC-specific food safety requirement
ServSafe Food Manager = Nationally recognized food safety manager certification
They are not simply two versions of the same certificate. NYC's program is designed specifically around New York City Health Code requirements, while ServSafe Manager is a standardized, nationally accredited certification program used throughout the United States.
Always check with your local regulatory agency or Health Department to determine which food safety certification is required for your establishment.
